Assuming you arrive by early ferry to Belfast, you could easily spend a little time getting to know the transformed capital of Northern Ireland. Take in the Titanic Quarter and its eponymous, award-winning museum, before a stroll in the Cathedral Quarter and an inevitable exchange of craic with the friendly locals. From here, it’s a two-hour oceanside drive along the captivating coast of Co Antrim to the village of Ballycastle, where you leave your car as you take the 30-minute crossing to Rathlin.

Time for your first return to the mainland, catching the return ferry to Ballycastle. You may choose to head directly for the west coast of Co Donegal, a drive of some 2.5 hours. However, it would be a pity to miss the Giant’s Causeway, just 30 minutes north of Ballycastle. Moreover, there’s so much more to see on the north coast – and there’s little need to rush. Enjoy ancient castles and monuments, glorious beaches and intimidating, rocky coastline all the way along the coast of Antrin, into Co Londonderry and Co Donegal. Just don’t miss your next ferry, at 5.00pm, from Burtonport to the island of Arranmore. And you can take your car on this particular ferry, giving you increased scope for exploring your next island base.

What to See and Do on Arranmore

Inhabited since prehistoric times, wild and untamed Arranmore is home to a rich heritage and vibrant Gaeltacht culture. Gaelic traditions continue to thrive here, the majority of the local population having Irish as their first language. This is a ruggedly beautiful place where waymarked trails lead from sandy beaches to rocky cliffs. Arresting views reach out over the Atlantic ocean past cliffs and rock arches to the majestic mainland mountains stretching from Glen Head to Tory Island. Steeped in insular history, the Island remains home to the promontory fort at Uilinn, dating from about 800BC, standing proudly on its clifftop perch. Home to a wide variety of marine and bird life, birdwatchers can often be found observing the many fulmars and shags along the steep cliffs. This is a great place in which to get active with many coastal and inland walks, and eBikes are available for daily rental. Arranmore is famous for its traditional music and lively pubs with open turf fires and the best Guinness to set you up for an evening of craic.

Set yourself up for the day with a legendary Irish breakfast, before meeting your friendly local guide for a two-hour tour of some of the island’s highlights. You’re almost certain to hear the story of the Cave of Slaughter, as well as seeing Chapel Strand, Illion and the island’s lighthouse. Get to know about the tragic Arranmore Disaster of 1935 and the 1940 sinking of SS Stolwijk, and some of the island’s wildlife in the company of one of the best guides in the business.

A 20-minute return ferry crossing will deposit you back to the Wild Atlantic Way as you point your car south on the wonderful Donegal coast. In short time you’ll reach Sliabh Liagh, some of Europe’s finest sea-cliffs, well worth an hour or two’s detour. Soon, round Donegal Bay, perhaps stopping for lunch in colourful Donegal Town, before carrying on along the Wild Atlantic Way through Sligo and along the fabulous coast of north Co Mayo. Your next island is the largest in Ireland and also the only one needing no ferry trip, reached by a short bridge across Achill Sound. From here it’s just 15 minutes to your accommodation overlooking Keel Beach.

Something a little different today, as, after breakfast you meet a local guide and set off to discover the story of Achill’s deserted village at Slievemore – a haunting reminder of the island’s past. A collection of some 100 stone dwellings, with evidence to suggest settlement since Norman times, the last were abandoned in the early 20th century, as residents ended their practice of Booleying – we’ll allow the guide to full in the fascinating detail for you.

With no rush today, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore at a leisurely pace. Consider heading north to Ballycroy National Park for a light hike through its stunning landscapes, or venture off the beaten-track to visit Rockfleet Castle or the historic Burrishoole Abbey—both steeped in fascinating stories.

When you arrive in Westport, you’ll be greeted by one of Ireland’s most vibrant towns. What to see and do on Clare Island

With sturdy walking boots, it takes about an hour to reach the northern side of the island, following well-marked paths and small roads. As you continue your exploration, you’ll encounter ancient megalithic tombs and serene inlets, each adding to Clare Island’s charm. As you journey south from County Mayo into County Galway, you’ll enter the enchanting realm of Connemara—a truly unspoiled paradise. This route is renowned for its scenery, making it a journey to savour. One of the highlights is the drive through Delphi Valley, where a narrow road winds past stunning loughs and towering, craggy mountains. As you wander, you’ll discover stunning beaches, secluded coves, and dramatic sea cliffs, along with the intriguing remains of a Cromwell-era fort. The island also boasts several good pubs and restaurants, ensuring you’ll have plenty of options for dining and relaxation.

Today you’ll be met by an island guide, setting off on a guided walk, the very best way to get to know this wild and intriguing place. With a focus on Inishbofin’s Cromwell-era fort, you’ll learn of the history of the island, from the earliest times through the mediaeval and up to the present day, as well as hearing about the work that goes on here in preserving Inishbofin’s language, culture, wildlife and landscape.

Following an early breakfast, set off for tiny Connemara Airport, where you’ll board a 16-seater aircraft for a thrilling short flight to the Aran island of Inis Mor. The aerial views of the islands set against the vast Atlantic are unforgettable.
