Continue north through the wild and dramatic landscapes of Sutherland, where winding coastal roads reveal breathtaking views at every turn. Pass through the remote village of Durness, cross the striking Kyle of Tongue causeway and make your way towards Caithness, the rugged northeastern corner of mainland Scotland.

Today is all about the journey, so take your time. With sweeping beaches, towering cliffs, hidden coves and unforgettable Highland scenery all along the route, there are plenty of opportunities to stop, explore and soak up the spectacular surroundings.

What’s a visit to Scotland without a taste of the national drink? Today you pay a visit to the UK mainland’s northernmost distillery.

Set on Scotland’s rugged far north coast, first established in 1821, today, that heritage lives on in every bottle of award-winning single malt whisky, crafted using traditional methods, the finest natural ingredients, and plenty of patience.

Hear the history for yourself and enjoy a tutored tasting of one or two drams – with provision made for the designated driver, of course.

Set off this morning to complete your route along Scotland’s north coast with a stop at Dunnet Head (the UK mainland’s northernmost point) and iconic John o’ Groats, before you begin your descent south.

At Wick, you’re setting sail on a coastal adventure, boarding a RiB for a trip along the stupendous coastline. You’ll zip south to Whaligoe Harbour and Steps, and hear the story of its significance during the once huge but long-gone herring trade. And head north to eerie Keiss Harbour and Castle with tales of Viking and Clan history along the way.

Later, continue down the coast to your final base in the pretty Sutherland town of Dornoch.

Dornoch is the perfect place to slow down and explore. Stroll along miles of golden sandy beach, browse Scottish crafts, discover local history at the HistoryLinks museum, or visit Scotland’s smallest cathedral.

Just a short distance up the coast, pay a visit to one of Scotland’s great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands, with history stretching back to the early 1300s. It has long been the seat of the Earls, and later the Dukes, of Sutherland, making it one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited homes.

With its elegant French château style, complete with soaring conical spires, the castle reflects the influence of leading architects including Sir Charles Barry, designer of London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s Sir Robert Lorimer. Over the years, it also served practical roles beyond its aristocratic roots — operating as a naval hospital during the First World War and later as a boys’ boarding school between 1965 and 1972.

The trip ends making the short drive to the Highland capital of Inverness. We can arrange additional nights here or further south as suits.
