There is something lovely about travelling in a small group when the group really is small. You have people to share the views, meals and discoveries with, but there is still room to ask questions, chat to your guide and enjoy the journey at a relaxed pace.
Some places are beautiful to look at. Others become unforgettable when someone helps you understand the stories behind them.
Imagine standing at the edge of Maeshowe, a 5,000-year-old chambered cairn in Orkney, while your guide explains how its entrance tunnel was aligned to catch the winter solstice sunset. Or watching the Glenfinnan Viaduct arc across the valley from your carriage window, as your guide shares the story of the Jacobite rising that played out in the hills below.
That is the real joy of a small guided group holiday. It is not simply about being taken from one place to the next. It is about travelling with someone who knows the region, understands the details, and can bring the landscape, history, culture and local character to life as you go.
Our guided collection includes both guided rail tours and guided island tours, from rail journeys through Scotland and Ireland to island-hopping adventures in the Channel Islands, Orkney, Shetland and beyond. Groups are genuinely small – no more than 18 guests – creating a relaxed and personal atmosphere rather than a crowded tour experience.

“The tour was most enjoyable from every aspect – itinerary, accommodation, tour leader, food. Five gold stars.”

A more personal way to travel
Our travellers tend to be curious, thoughtful and well-travelled. They are not looking to be hurried from one famous sight to the next. They want to understand the places they visit, hear the stories behind them and experience each day with a little more depth.
That is where our guides make such a difference. They are knowledgeable, warm and genuinely passionate about the places they share. They set the tone from the first evening, helping everyone feel at ease, and often become one of the most memorable parts of the holiday. It might be a story told at just the right moment, a local recommendation you would never have found alone, or a small detail they point out that changes the way you see a place.
The group itself becomes part of the experience too. With no more than 14 to 18 travellers, there is space for natural conversation and easy camaraderie. Shared dinners, scenic journeys, ferry crossings and time between stops all help a group of strangers become travelling companions. It is one of the quieter joys of a guided holiday, and something our guests often remember just as fondly as the places themselves.

Two ways to travel: rail tours and island tours
Our guided collection divides naturally into two families, each with its own character and sense of discovery.
Our guided rail tours are built around some of the finest train journeys in the British Isles. On our North Highlands & Orkney Guided Rail Tour, you travel through Scotland’s breathtaking north coast by rail before crossing to the Orkney Islands, with your guide alongside you throughout. For those drawn to Ireland, our Wild Atlantic Way Guided Rail Tour follows the country’s celebrated west coast by train, from Dublin through Galway, Killarney and beyond, with a maximum of just 15 passengers.
Then there are our island tours, created for places where the adventure lies beyond the railway line. Our Orkney & Shetland Guided Small Group Tour continues to be a firm favourite, with new 2027 departures added following strong demand and multiple sold-out dates in 2026. Over the course of the tour, you travel from Glasgow through Orkney and on to Shetland, with a knowledgeable tour leader alongside you throughout.
The Channel Islands Small Group Tour offers something quite different in atmosphere: warmer skies, a French-inflected way of life, excellent local food and drink, and the chance to explore Guernsey, Herm and Jersey with someone who can bring their history, scenery and island character to life. Think private beach walks, oyster tasting on Jersey, and time at a local wine estate – experiences that give you a real flavour of the islands, not just a view of them.
For those drawn to the wilder edges of Scotland, our Outer Hebrides Small Group Tour follows the Atlantic island chain through sweeping beaches and working crofting communities, with a guide who knows these islands closely. It is also one to think about early – with only two departures, this is usually the first of our guided holidays to sell out.
Each tour has its own rhythm, but the idea is the same: thoughtful routes, small groups, expert guidance and enough time to properly enjoy where you are.
“Enthusiastic. Knowledgeable. Humorous. Itinerary was interesting and enjoyable.”

Everything arranged, beautifully
One of the great pleasures of a guided holiday is being able to relax into the journey. We take care of the route, accommodation, travel arrangements and experiences, so you can enjoy where you are rather than think about what needs to happen next.
It is an approach our Managing Director, Zoe, puts beautifully:
“Every trip that we create, we organise it like we’re sending our own family out on that holiday.”
That is especially helpful on holidays involving rail journeys, ferry crossings, island schedules or several stops along the way. These are often the details that make a trip feel special, but they can take time and confidence to organise independently. We make the connections, consider the timings and shape each day so it flows naturally.
Accommodation is part of that care too. Across our guided tours, we choose places to stay for character, comfort and quality – small hotels, guesthouses and inns that feel like part of the journey, not just somewhere to sleep. Every property is researched and stayed in by our team before it becomes part of a tour itinerary.
The result is a holiday that feels well thought through, but never rigid. You have the reassurance of expert planning, with enough space to enjoy the moments that make travel feel personal.
“I was made most welcome by our guide and all the couples and enjoyed their company. So many stimulating conversations and so much laughter.”
– Hendry, Essex, UK

Ideal for couples, friends and solo travellers
Our small guided group holidays are a lovely choice if you enjoy the idea of travelling with others, but still value comfort, quality and personal space. Couples and friends often enjoy the sociable side, with shared meals and discoveries along the way. Solo travellers can feel very at home too, with the reassurance of a welcoming group while still enjoying the independence of their own experience.
Our guided groups typically bring together people with a shared curiosity about the world – an interest in culture, local life, food, wildlife, history or simply the pleasure of travelling somewhere properly.
It is not about being hurried along in a crowd. It is about travelling in good company, with people who care about the same things you do.

Travel with insight, comfort and confidence
Our 2027 small guided group holiday dates have now launched, making this a lovely time to start thinking ahead. With genuinely small groups, availability is naturally limited, and popular departures can fill quickly. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing the holiday that suits you best, while also giving you something wonderful to look forward to.
Whether you are drawn to the romance of rail, the character of island life, or simply the pleasure of exploring with an expert guide by your side, our small guided group holidays offer a warm, enriching and reassuring way to travel.
