Details
This carefully designed holiday allows you to explore the spectacular landscapes of the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris. It takes in some stunning drives, allowing you to appreciate the contrasts of these magical islands. This holiday features two of our carefully handpicked guest houses, which offer space, comfort, and a very warm welcome.
Isle of Lewis
Its just over an hour’s flight from Edinburgh or Glasgow to Stornoway, with your hire car conveniently available at the airport.
Belying its two names, the northerly land-mass of Lewis and Harris is, in fact, a single island – although with starkly differing characters.
Lewis is positively bursting with archaeological treasures, notably the eerie Standing Stones of Callanish, the Pictish Carloway Broch and several blackhouse villages. The bustling town of Stornoway boasts a vibrant social scene, where traditional music and crafts thrive in lively pubs, clubs, markets and shops.
Further south, Harris’s strange lunar landscape gives way to vast sea lochs, which retreat at low tide to reveal huge expanses of pristine white sand fringed with machair and sprinkled with vivid pink and yellow wildflowers. On the east coast, the undulating ‘Golden Road’ cuts through dramatic rock formations to take the visitor on an enchanting tour of lochans, coves, crofts and cottages selling the world-famous Harris tweed. The sunsets at Luskentyre sands are worth crossing the island for, and from here you can also gaze across to the magical isle of Taransay, made famous in the BBC’s ‘Castaway 2000’ series.
Your Guesthouse on Lewis
Your accommodation in Stornoway is a newly refurbished, family owned bungalow with just two very comfortable and cosy en-suite bedrooms. The Stornoway born-and-bred host is here to ensure your complete relaxation and satisfaction, serving authentic, locally sourced breakfasts and giving unique, local advice on anything you might need to know about the Outer Hebrides.
Your Guesthouse on Harris
Your accommodation on Harris is a converted and extended schoolhouse at Finsbay, one of the most atmospheric and evocative points on the island. The hosts – one of whose mother attended school in this very building – have spent many years adding their stamp to the place and in the process creating a unique three-bedroom property, with roaring fire in the living room, walls adorned with art and rooms filled with long-owned books and family pieces.
The holiday normally includes two nights on Harris and two nights in Lewis, but can be tailormade to suit.
