Travelling in the off-season offers its own unique and irresistible rewards.
Whatever the time of year, Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales offer stunning holiday opportunities. Taking a trip outside of the traditional months provides a rich and varied selection of locations and experiences that are guaranteed to reward the curious traveller.
Holiday locations are likely to be less busy than in the Spring or Summer, meaning you could have your pick of local restaurants and experiences. Getting away from the crowds also allows you to see things from a different viewpoint; the winter light adding a fresh dimension to the stunning landscapes, dramatic coastlines and warm, welcoming villages. In parts of Scotland you might even catch sight of the famed Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’.
The weather is always changeable here, whatever the season, so why not embrace it and discover some wonderful delights. Travel through majestic snow-capped mountains or explore frosty forests, view the myriad shades of bracken and leaves as they change across the seasons, take the chance to snuggle up cosily by a roaring fire, or maybe enjoy a brisk, revitalising walk along pristine, empty beaches. Be reassured that we always keep a close eye on the weather and are there, ready to support you, should it affect your travel plans. Off-season travel doesn’t mean that you‘ll be restricted in what’s on offer either, with a wide and varied range of magical holidays to choose from – be it via rail, on a road trip or fly-drive. Take in the Scottish Highlands for beautiful sea lochs and romantic glens, as well as enjoying Edinburgh’s renowned architecture and history. You could visit the spectacular Cairngorms for an unforgettable wildlife experience in the company of an expert guide.
Scotland’s enchanting islands can be also yours, with Shetland’s natural, rugged beauty – in January it hosts Up Helly Aa, an unmissable celebration with a famous torchlit procession and the fiery demise of a Viking longship – or Orkney’s mixture of neolithic sites and flourishing wildlife. For the full islands experience you could even holiday across both. Is there anything better than watching the Highlands go by from the comfort of a train? When you add historic castles and finest whisky distilleries, you have a heady mixture that offers some of Scotland’s greatest hits in a single trip. If it’s whisky that’s your passion, then a self-drive trail through acclaimed whisky areas would be your ultimate odyssey.
Relaxing rail journeys are also the order of the day across England and Ireland, with the opportunity to traverse the length of both countries, drinking in the views, fascinating histories and experiencing the locals and their own tales and folklore.
For the motoring enthusiasts, there’s no better time to experience the open roads and stunning vistas of Scotland’s world-renowned North Coast 500 driving route. With winding roads past misty lochs and woodland full of autumn colours, it’s a driver’s dream. The highways of the island of Ireland also hold their own delights, whether its taking your time to fully explore it’s Ancient East Coast, or heading upwards to Northern Ireland and experiencing it’s stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Equally appealing are the winding routes along the rugged coastline of England’s Northumberland, where you’ll find wildlife, breathtaking scenery and the chance to view the star filled heavens in all their glory. Whilst the epic landscapes of wonderful Wales, from the Brecon Beacons all the way up to Snowdonia, can be enjoyed on an epic road trip.
