What to see and do

For such a compact island – nine miles long, three miles wide – Guernsey offers a remarkable range of activities and attractions. Historic capital St Peter Port bustles throughout the day, the harbour buzzing to the to-and-fro of craft of all shapes and sizes, watched over by 13th century Castle Cornet, where you could easily spend an entire day exploring its fortifications, gardens and museums. Victor Hugo’s extraordinary Hauteville House is a must-see here, too, before you take to the tangle of colourful back streets. Outside of town, the island’s coastline pitches and dives from craggy cliff to sandy cove, evidence of WW2 occupation dotted along its length.

Make your way to St Peter Port this morning, where you meet one of Guernsey’s best guides for a private guided walk of the island capital. Uncover the town’s less-obvious corners and hidden history as you gently stroll along the harbourside and throughout its inclines. Any areas of interest you may have in particular can be brought to life as you go.

After a delicious breakfast you could take a leisurely stroll on the gorgeous stretch of beach near your hotel, maybe with a mid-morning stop for coffee. Later, take to the fine roads around the island and discover some of its rich and fascinating detail. The eerie German Underground Hospital museum always delivers a chill, while the wonderful Little Chapel is one man’s quite staggering labour of love. We’ll provide all the information you need to make the most of your time here.

Back in the air today, for the brief journey to Jersey. Again, collect your rental car at the airport and within a few minutes you’re either at your accommodation, exploring the wilder north coast, or taking the plunge into busy St Helier.

What to see and do

For a place of its size, Jersey certainly over-delivers in terms of engrossing places to visit. Head to the southwestern corner for dramatic La Corbiere before a stroll through Les Mielles Nature Reserve, where the cooler months bring curlew, bar-tailed godwit, oystercatcher, grey plover, redshank and sanderling, as well as over 1,000 Brent geese. Explore the less-busy north coast, its rocky coves and sandy bays, before descending on the jewel-like coastal village of Gorey, in the shadow of fabulous Mount Orgueil Castle. Later, perhaps take to the maze of streets in St Helier, for endless dining and shopping.

Today, make the short drive to La Rocque Harbour, where you meet your friendly and knowledgeable local guide for a fascinating walk on the seabed between enigmatic Icho and Seymour Towers. Almost lunar in appearance, the landscape may look barren at first glance, but it’s actually teeming with marine life, brought into sharp focus by your guide.

A day of more exploration at your own pace, perhaps taking in the story of Jersey’s occupation during WW2 and the picturesque seaside village of St Aubin. If the tide is on your side, stroll across the causeway to St Aubin’s Fort, working up your appetite for a fine seafood lunch or dinner.
