We’ve carefully designed this route to ensure overnight stops are convenient for charging your Tesla vehicle plus easy driving distances, eliminating electric car “range anxiety”. Even better, there are no fuel costs!

Day one – Inverness to Caithness

Your Tesla Model S (other models subject to availability) will be waiting for you in Inverness, fully charged and ready to go. This holiday takes the North Coast 500 anti-clockwise, but clockwise is perfectly feasible, too. Make your way around the Beauly Firth and join the A9 as it hugs the east coast, twisting and pitching all the way to just north of Wick. We’ll provide lots of ideas and recommendations for places to stop along the way, formed from our years of experience in seeking out Scotland’s hidden corners.

Your hotel in Caithness

Dating from the 15th century, your hotel in Caithness is one of Scotland’s most extraordinary properties. Down an endless, tree-lined driveway, dramatically poised on the edge of a sheer cliff, the first approach to this castle hotel is unforgettable. Step inside and discover a vast collection of ancient artefacts dating back to the castle’s inception, with a grand dining room serving the best local produce, while enormous antique beds in the sumptuous bedrooms ensure a restful night’s sleep.

The hotel features an electric vehicle charging point within its grounds.

Day three – by John o’ Groats and across the North Coast

It’s a short drive from your hotel to John o’ Groats, the northernmost settlement on the UK mainland, where you’ll want to stop to record your visit, and maybe take a detour to Dunnet Head, its most northerly point. Then make your way along the wild north coast, home to the relatively bustling town of Thurso, and some fabulous – and often deserted – golden beaches, perfect for photo ops along the way, before arriving at your comfortable hotel in Sutherland.

Your hotel in Sutherland

Your family owned hotel is a cosy and long-established inn, with an inviting bar and good restaurant serving local and seasonal produce. Much refurbished over the past couple of years, the owners have made great strides in improving the public areas and guest accommodation, and the spacious bedrooms are an appealing blend of modern and traditional touches.

Day five – South through Sutherland to Ross and Cromarty

For your longest day on the road during this holiday, you’re in for an enormous treat as the route follows superb roads amidst some of the UK’s most dramatic mountain scenery. We advise stopping along the way at the pretty harbour town of Ullapool, perhaps for lunch, while topping up your car’s battery at the charging point by the ferry port, before continuing the journey towards your final hotel.

Your hotel by Loch Torridon

Set in extensive mature grounds on the edge of a majestic sea loch, your hotel in Torridon boasts one of the finest and most peaceful locations in Scotland. Attentive staff see that your every need is met, and you’re sure to love the wonderfully comfortable bedrooms, beautifully presented public areas and acclaimed restaurant. Adjacent to the hotel, the inn offers a more laid-back atmosphere for dinner and drinks.

Day seven – dramatic Bealach na Bà and completing the North Coast 500

Your final day on the road takes you around the legendary Applecross peninsula, traversing the famous Bealach na Bà pass, one of the UK’s most challenging and thrilling roads, while Applecross itself is a fine place to stop, with terrific views and a well-established inn serving good food. Once off the pass, the run to Inverness is hugely picturesque, along Loch Carron, by Lochs Dughaill, Scaven and Gowan, before rounding the Beauly Firth and making your way to Inverness Castle, the North Coast 500’s official start/finish line. You’ll return the Tesla in Inverness, perhaps a new convert to the power and serenity of top-of-the-range electric motoring?
