Jacobite Steam Train Tours
Enjoy one of Scotland’s most iconic rail journeys with a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train
Here at McKinlay Kidd, we have scoured Britain and Ireland from top to bottom in pursuit of the most evocative train trips imaginable. One of Scotland’s most iconic rail journeys is, of course, a trip on the Jacobite Steam Train. This holiday highlight has featured as part and parcel of a number of our most popular train tours since we started the company back in 2003, and we were the first to combine it with a stay on the majestic Isle of Skye.
Delighting passengers since 1984, this 82-mile train journey spans some of Scotland’s most striking Highland terrain as it follows the West Highland Line tracks from Fort William to Mallaig. You will feel as though you have stepped back in time into the height of the Victorian steam age – be ready for the chugging sounds and sooty smells which contrast with your well-appointed carriage – we strive to ensure you are in first-class for premium comfort, whenever available. Once the journey commences, all of your concentration will be on the breath-taking extremes of scenery you pass. Keep your camera at the ready as you take in the overwhelming beauty, including Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and Europe’s deepest loch (Loch Nevis).
One of the highlights of your time on the Jacobite Steam Train will undoubtedly be crossing the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. You will be agog as the elegant train curves along the viaduct’s 21 spans. Harry Potter movie buffs will recognise the viaduct from the Hogwarts Express; others with a keen interest in history may note this was the location where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the Jacobite Rising in 1745. You will have ample opportunity to explore with a short stop in Glenfinnan to admire the viaduct structure from below and take in panoramic views of beautiful Loch Shiel.
The end of the line brings you to Mallaig, hopping off point for the ferry to the spectacular Isle of Skye – why not add a few days here at the conclusion of your Scottish steam train journey and acclimatise yourself to island life? Take a peek at our four night West Highland Line to Skye holiday, designed to tick that very box.

If you enjoy the independence of travelling without being part of a group, one of our self-guided train holidays will fit the bill. Spend a fortnight uncovering the delights of a Grand Tour of Scotland by Train, or go even further afield for a complete rail tour of Britain.
If it’s first class all the way for you, including a stay in one of Scotland’s finest castle hotels, we can make it happen on Premier Round Scotland by Train.
